LNM 43 - L'oiseau du grand large

LNM 43 - The Offshore Bird

Whether it's simply fast cruising in comfort and safety

or

if you want to enjoy a weekend race -

Sequoia may be the yacht you have been searching for.

What do you get with Sequoia?

You get  a FAST, SAFE, COMFORTABLE boat, with accommodation for two adults and two children which is still able to sail around the world via the three southern Capes.

FAST:

Why? Because the hull design is inspired by the racing monohull "Class 40" and although she is designed for long term onboard living,  her weight, fully loaded is still only 9.2 tonnes (7.8 tonnes empty).

She has a deep and fine vertical lifting keel with a lead bulb (1.9 tonnes from 2.8m up to 1.5m).

She has 2 tillers with twin rudders.

Atlantic passage in 12.5 days, pacific passage in 16 days with one day off to help a dismasted boat, canary island to cabo verde 3.5 days for  738nm, tonga to NZ in 6.5 days.

SAFE:

Why? Because the hull construction and design provides a light, yet strong and rigid structure, made of outer layers of glass fibre/epoxy with a plywood core and inner layers of glass fibre and epoxy.  She has carbon fibre frames and carbon fibre reinforcement for her keel and stay attachement points. SAFE, because of her 10 cubic metres of foam as well as front and rear water proof crash boxes, she is unsinkable !

CONFORTABLE:

The hull of Sequoia is a completely different approach to cruising boat design from  traditional cruiser hull , but at the same time, it is also not a totally radical concept.  With a fine entry at the bow and the removal of unnecessary volume at the stern, the pitching is reduced significantly, giving a surprising smooth ride.   While still permitting comfortable, long term living aboard her ablitly to sail has not been compromised, this means that she is able to easily achieve daily runs that are impossible in other cruising boats of her size.  Average daily runs between 160 and 230 nautical miles are run of the mill. Her ability to cover long distances in short times provides an added safety feature - you can often outrun weather systems not possible to avoid in slower cruising boats.  A few of the other features of Sequoia that make her a comfortable home on the water are : the dog house, the head with a separate shower; the watermaker as well as a washing machine.  She is easily handled by one person and will appeal to the solo sailor who also enjoys the exhilaration that comes with excellent sailing peformance.

Long and spacious galley with sea view                                                               Saloon with sea view when seated or when standind up

Work to be done

The boat, has been renew in 2012 for outer part and 2015 for inside part, engine, mast, shafts, furler bearing, rigging and electronic, news sails has been bought in 2015, but only install for the mainsail in polynesia and regarding the headsail and forestaysail they are in september  2017 still in the bag. They have been used 3 weeks to test it before leaving europe. There is nothing hidded, every thing is easy to control and maintain.

The underwater paint is in copper coat, there is still 3 kilo of it onboard to make some paint retouching when you dry the boat, 16 kilo of copper coat has been apply in 2013 by myself, and it work pretty well.

Regarding the lifting keel, this is almost a maintenance free part of the boat, the manual winch have to get some grease, you have to check the rope (there are both in Dyneema® 7mm from 2015.) and there is a safety solution to be able to get her back to the right position without the used of the winch (never used anyway). The setting of the keel is done by hard PEHD 1000, I change them in 2016 that was the first time in the history of the boat, there is no keel side or front movement has it is lock on almost 1 meter. Very simple and easy to used, that take around 10 minutes to go from 2.8m up to 1.5m (so take care when you jump into the water) and 2 minutes in the other way.

The chaine has to be control regularely or change, you can add 5 to 10 meters, even if we never had any surprise of slidding.

The PVC 600gr used for the roof of the dog house will have to be change, if I keep the boat, I would turn into plywood epoxy one, with transparent PVC windows on the side because i like to be under this cover and get the air coming on the side in good weather that is a nice place to watch out.

Honeslty, this all I think you will have to do before sailing back offshore, If i had more time I would be pleased to continue to travel with her with a low budget.
